3 Things in 3 Months: What I’ve Learned About Blogging

Today marks the three month anniversary of this blog.

I’m still just getting started but I’ve already had some great experiences and learned some good lessons.  Here are three of the most important:

  1. The more often I write and the more I write with my own personality the more people read and are interested in my blog. Yes, this makes sense – but I’m genuinely surprised by how much my own enthusiasm seems to attract the enthusiasm of others.
  2. If you have something on your blog and you’re posting it on another social media site, link it to your blog! I used my fan art from this post to reply to the Arrow writer’s on Twitter and they retweeted it – to the tune of like 13,000 people seeing the tweet. But did I link the most viral tweet I’ve ever made to my blog?  Uh, no.  Social Media Fail.  This experience also taught me that you never really know what things are going to attract attention, which is both awesome and scary.
  3. It’s okay to, thoughtfully, break the rules. Everything I read about blogs told me I should severely limit the number of tags I have.  Since this blog runs the gamut of geek culture and the writing experience I ignored that – I wanted people to see the range of the blog and for people who are just interested in my writing posts, or my Arrow posts, to be able to find those easily. I tag my posts like a crazy woman and so far it seems to be working just fine.
